The best-selling historical novel A Land Remembered is being adapted into a television series, with filming set to take place entirely in Florida. The beloved novel by Patrick D. Smith has long been a classroom staple and cultural touchstone for generations of Floridians.

Now, Tampa-based producers Todd Wiseman Jr. and Christa Boarini are bringing the sweeping multigenerational story to life in the Tampa Bay area.

The producing duo is committed to filming in their home state, believing the Florida landscape is essential to the story’s authenticity.

A Land Remembered has to be made in Florida,” Wiseman said. “To film it anywhere else would be almost blasphemous. We’re going to do it here. I want to tell Florida stories.”

The series, described by some close to the project as “the Yellowstone of Florida,” follows a pioneering family as they struggle to survive and adapt to the state’s unforgiving environment after migrating from Georgia. Spanning generations, the story traces the family’s journey from humble settlers to powerful real estate developers.

Wiseman secured the rights to A Land Remembered in perpetuity in December 2024. Moved by the story’s emotional depth and cultural importance, he quickly recognized its potential as a compelling television drama.

“With this series we have the opportunity not just to bring this beloved story to life, but to introduce a wide audience to Florida’s rich history. The original cowboys started here, in Florida. It’s here that the Spanish first brought cattle from overseas. There’s more to this State than theme parks and spring break. Florida history is a microcosm of American history,” said Boarini.

The adaptation has generated widespread excitement within the Tampa Bay community. Film Tampa Bay and Visit Tampa Bay have partnered with the State of Florida and the production team to bring the series to life. As part of that collaboration, Florida’s Department of Agriculture is providing additional support for the project.

In spring 2025, the Florida Legislature approved a $500,000 appropriation to help keep the production in-state. The series is expected to spend more than $17 million during its first season, creating hundreds of jobs and utilizing dozens of locations across Florida — potentially making it a major win for the state. The project also aims to demonstrate that Florida has a rich tapestry of history and cultural content ready to be brought to the screen.

“We’re honored to support a project that centers Floridians voices and stories—these are the narratives that truly matter,” said Tyler Martinolich, Executive Director of Film Tampa Bay. “Filming entirely in Florida not only deepens the authenticity of the story but also reveals parts of our state that audiences rarely get to see. This is a powerful opportunity to spotlight culture, history and place in a way that resonates far beyond the screen.”

“Having a production of this scale in our backyard is not only a tremendous economic win—it’s a meaningful cultural moment for Tampa Bay,” said Santiago Corrada, President & CEO of Visit Tampa Bay. “A Land Remembered is more than just a beloved novel; it’s a celebration of Florida’s heritage. Bringing it to life on screen here showcases the deep well of talent, history, and natural beauty our region offers. We’re proud to support local creators like Todd and Christa, whose commitment to telling authentic Florida stories helps position Hillsborough County as a premier destination for both film and travel.”

Wiseman said the series will be headquartered out of Tampa Bay, but additional Florida locations are under consideration to showcase the state’s natural and cultural diversity.
